Abstract
In this paper, intumescent flame retardant masterbatch was prepared by incorporating ammonium polyphosphate (APP), charring-foaming agent (CFA) and nano-silica (SiO2) into polypropylene with high melt index (HM-PP) and then extruded through twin screw extruders. The effect of mass ratio between intumescent flame retardant and HM-PP on process property of masterbatch was also investigated. The obtained masterbatch was mixed with polypropylene (M02) and directly injected to prepare flame retardant PP composite. The flame retardant properties of PP composite were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning (UL-94) tests, the mechanical properties were investigated by flexural strength and tensile strength, and the dispersion and compatibility of the flame retardant in materials were studied by scanning electron microscopy and the moisture resistance property was investigated. The results demonstrate that the flame retardant masterbatch can be continuously produced when the loading amount of flame retardant is 65%. The samples successfully pass UL-94 V-0 flammability rating and the LOI value reaches 34.3% when the loading amount of masterbatch is 33.8% with the flame retardant content of 22%. Compared with the flame retardant polypropylene obtained by incorporating flame retardant into matrix, the capability and dispersion of masterbatch in polypropylene matrix are enhanced. Meanwhile, the mechanical and water resistant properties of flame retardant polypropylene are also enhanced due to the introduction of flame retardant masterbatch and the flame retardant PP materials still remain excellent properties after water resistant tests.
