Abstract

The spectrophotometric titrations have been performed at 298.15 K in buffered aqueous solution (pH = 7.20) to give the stability constants (lgK s) for the supramolecular system formed by mono-[6-phenylseleno)-6-deoxy]-β-cyclodextrin (1), nono-[6-(p-chlorophenylseleno)-6-deoxy]-β-cyclodextrin (2), mono-[6-(naphthylseleno)-6-deoxy]-β-cyclodextrin(3), and mono-[6-(benzylseleno)-6-deoxy]-β-cyclodextrin(4) with a series of aliphatic alcohols. The molecular binding-ability and selectivity for aliphatic alcohols of modified β-cyclodextrins(1-4) are discussed from the sizerfit, geometrical complement, van der Waals force, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions relationships between the host cavity and the guest molecule. The results investigated indicate that the benzylseleno moiety of β-cyclodextrin derivative(4) as a probe for spectrometry can enhance not only the molecular binding-ability but also the molecular recognizing-ability.
