Surface plasmon dispersion and damping on Ag(110)

The surface plasmon excitation on the Ag(110) surface along two high symmetry directions, [11̄0] and [001], has been investigated using angle-resolved electron-energy loss spectroscopy. While the surface plasmon energies at q>∥ ≈ 0 are found to be equal and to agree with reported values for Ag(100) and Ag(111), the dispersions are anisotropic and different from those reported for the other crystal faces. The dispersions can be fitted with second order polynomials in powers of the parallel momentum (q∥). The anisotropy in the dispersions appears in the quadratic term. This may indicate the influence of bulk contributions to the anisotropic surface plasmon dispersion. In contrast to the energy of the plasmon, the linewidth is isotropic, dependent only on the magnitude of q∥. The qualitatively different dispersion and the linewidth for Ag(110) compared to those reported for Ag(100) by Rocca et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 64 (1990) 2398] indicate a strong face dependence of the surface plasmon of silver. © 1993.
