The interaction of hydrogen with simple metal surfaces

The interaction of atomic and molecular hydrogen with a number of simple metal surfaces (Mg(0001), Mg(112̄0), Li(110), K(110)) has been studied using EELS, TDS, and core-level spectroscopy. Although no evidence for molecular hydrogen adsorption is observed at ≥ 100 K, atomic hydrogen is bound to the surface in a strongly chemisorbed phase (hydride). When the substrate is annealed, hydrogen is irreversibly absorbed into the bulk region; in the case of the alkali metals, clusters of bulk hydride are nucleated within the bulk clean metal. Overall trends of the H/simple metal interaction are discussed in light of theoretical (jellium model) predictions and experimental results from similar systems. © 1994.
