Abstract
Drag and torque in deviated wells has always been a concern to the petroleum engineer. Their prediction has been made through the use of mathematical models that call for, among other parameters, the borehole friction factor, and have been verified using field data and the actual well trajectory. These studies show that the amount of additional load, in directional wells, caused by friction is significant and therefore, when possible, should be planned for in advance. This research investigated the drag predictions that could have been made at the planning stage of 4 directional wells, restricted to a vertical plane, and compared them to field data. For the wells in which drag was a significant portion of the hook load and the amount and magnitude of shallow doglegs were not much, the predictions were accurate.
