Abstract
The most undesirable and expensive method for oilfield-pit closure is off-site transportation and disposal of waste from the pits. For pit liquids, the alternatives to off-site disposal are on-site pit-closure methods, such as land spreading, discharging to surface waters under a permit, evaporation, annular injection, or injection into an injection well. For pit solids, the alternatives are land treatment, burial, and encapsulation and burial. The decision regarding which method of pit closure should be use is based on the sampling and testing of pit contents and the background soils.
