Abstract
The predictions for the coupled bulk and grain scale response of strain hardened granular explosive to dynamic loading were discussed. A modeling technique was used for the study that was compatible with thermodynamics and grain contact mechanics. It was found that three classes of bulk dynamic compaction wave solutions were predicted for increasing impact speed, which include a single viscoelastic wave, a leading viscoelastic wave and a trailing viscoelastic and viscoplastic wave. The results show that the localized heating near intergranular contact surfaces can trigger sustained combustion of the material.
