Abstract

This paper presents the result of a survey study that was conducted among the construction contractors in the deep south USA that build water and wastewater treatment plants in order to identify the major factors influencing productivity of construction projects. The results of survey revealed that the respondents perceive skills and experience of workforce, management, job planning, workers motivation, and material availability are the major drivers of productivity. The comparison of major productivity factors in this study to Thailand, Canada, Iran, Indonesia, and Nigeria showed some similarities in major productivity factors. The availability of material was identified as a major productivity factor among all the studies compared in this paper. Further analysis of major productivity factors was also performed at several construction jobsites to provide recommendations in form of best practices that may be implemented at projects to improve labor productivity. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd and IPMA.
