Abstract

Ten full-scale superposed reinforced concrete beams with overlapping hoops subjected to monotonic torsion were tested. The main objective was to study the effects of stirrup form and ratio on the deformation characteristics, failure mode and torsional capacity of the beams. The results indicate that the composite beams with overlapping hoops have the same torsional capacity as that of the beams with conventional closed stirrups. Before the ultimate capacity is reached, the torsional performance of both types of composite beams is similar. After the ultimate capacity is reached, the ductility of the beams with overlapping hoops anchored by 90-degree hooks is deteriorated, while the torsional performance of the beams with overlapping hoops anchored by 135-degree hooks is the same as that of the conventional closed stirrups. Therefore the overlapping hoops anchored by 135-degree hooks are recommended for the composite beams carrying uniaxial torque, and the torsional capacity can be calculated according to the national standard GB 50010-2010 'Code for design of concrete structures'. The configuration of overlapping hoops anchored by 90-degree is not recommended.
