Abstract
The effects of small data sets on the cost of preventive maintenance (PM) are discussed. Total cost error estimates for the rank regression, maximum likelihood estimator and hybrid methods are characterized both at an aggregate level and at specific levels of small data set sizes and maintenance cost ratios. The method to quantify risk by using distribution information is also discussed. An improved estimation procedure for use in determining PM intervals is developed to provide the maintenance manager with a more accurate PM interval, Tp(est), designed to reduce the total cost error.
