Abstract
An experimentally verified transient wear model is developed for determining the onset of steady-state ts. The model does not require any unknown constants. It is shown that the transient wear behavior during the running-in phase is strongly dependent on the initial surface roughness. The efficacy of the transient wear model and the methodology for determining the onset of steady state is demonstrated by analyzing several case studies from the literature and performing series of additional pin-on-disk experiments with various surface roughness parameters.
