Abstract
Louisiana State University, the US, is exploring the combination of lean production methods and traditional safety tools with a procedure called safety and lean integrated kaizen (SLIK) to improve safety and productivity in the construction industry. The SLIK procedure uses kaizen and job safety analysis (JSA) and is used to evaluate and improve one workstation at the modular homebuilder. It is being observed that off-site and on-site prefabricated modules have great potential to reduce waste in labor, material and other areas, improving the bottom line when such lean implementation is realized and construction processes are well-designed. The main goal of the research team at the university in developing the lean procedure has been to reduce wastage and chances for accidents at construction sites.
