Benchmarking and Beyond: CLAG's Role in Evaluating Research Agendas, 1970–2020

The first meeting of the Conference of Latin American Geography (CLAG) in 1970 and its publication in 1972 were overviews of prior research and identification of new research frontiers. Since then, three additional CLAG Yearbooks attempted every decade to identify promising research agendas. This article provides an evaluation of these decadal efforts, sometimes labelled “Benchmarks.” The final volume of the Yearbook in 2002 was also the final benchmark issue, with a streamlined format that was also meant to be sold as a stand-alone book. The article also provides some reflections on the more recent evolution of “agenda-making” in the context of diverse and pluralistic positionalities, after the Yearbook became JLAG.
La primera reunión de la Conferencia de Geografía Latinoamericana (CLAG) en 1970 y su publicación en 1972 fueron descripciones generales de investigaciones anteriores e identificación de nuevas fronteras de investigación. Desde entonces, tres Yearbooks adicionales intentaron cada década identificar agendas de investigación prometedoras. Este artículo proporciona una evaluación de estos esfuerzos decenales, a veces etiquetados como "Benchmarks" (Puntos de Referencia). El volumen final del Yearbook en 2002 también fue el último Benchmark, con un formato simplificado que también debía venderse como un libro independiente. El artículo también proporciona algunas reflexiones sobre la evolución más reciente de la "elaboración de la agenda" en el contexto de posicionalidades diversas y pluralistas, después de que el Yearbook se convirtiera en JLAG.
