Forging a Regional Speleology: Publications, Friendship, and Identity in Cuban and Venezuelan Cave Science and Exploration

This paper examines the regional geographies of speleology--the science of caves--between Cuba and Venezuela since 1967. Both countries are among the few in Latin America that forged a speleology of national scope with international impact. In particular, three aspects are considered: 1) the vision and creation of Latin America's own regional speleology federation in 1983; 2) the only international Venezuelan speleological expedition beyond its borders in 1995 in Holguín, Cuba; and 3) the role of the Boletín de la Sociedad Venezolana de Espeleología(BSVE). Of these three, the 3rd is the most consequential. Cuban speleologists make up the single largest international contribution to the BSVE. Interviews with five of these authors reveal the impact and importance that the BSVE had in promoting Cuban speleology beyond its borders. Identified as serious, scientifically rigorous, and valuable because it was published in Spanish, the BSVE not only promoted speleology, but also helped forge friendships among speleologists in both countries. Despite the highly embodied and experiential qualities of speleological practice, regionally between Cuba and Venezuela, these geographies of speleology are highly personal and textual, geographies that offer an intriguing window into Latin American field science that challenged dominant Cold War geopolitical categories.

Este ensayo examina las geografías de la espeleología--la ciencia de las cuevas--entre Cuba y Venezuela desde 1967. Ambos países están entre los pocos de América Latina que han forjado una espeleología de alcance nacional con impacto internacional. Se consideran tres aspectos en particular: 1) la visión y creación de una federación regional de América Latina en 1983; 2) la única expedición internacional venezolana en 1995, en Holguín, Cuba; y 3) el rol del Boletín de la Sociedad Venezolana de Espeleología (BSVE). De los tres, el 3ero es el más consequente. Espeleólogos cubanos conforman la mayor contribución internacional al BSVE. Entrevistas con cinco de estos autores confirman el impacto e importancia que el BSVE ha tenido en promoverla espeleología cubana más allá de las fronteras. Identificado como serio, científicamente riguroso y valioso por ser publicado en español, el BSVEno solamente promovió la espeleología, si no también forjó amistades entre espeleólogos en Cuba y Venezuela. A pesar de las cualidades encarnadas y experienciales de la práctica espeleológica, estas geografías de espeleología son altamente personales y textuales, geografías que ofrecen una ventana interesante hacia las ciencias de campo en América Latina que retaron las categorías geopolíticas dominantes de la Guerra Fría.
