Abstract
Partially reconfigurable devices allow the execution of different tasks at the same time on the same chip. This opens opportunities to study aspects of operating systems for these devices such as placement techniques. In this paper we design an online scheduler to schedule and place a real-time set of tasks on a reconfigurable device. The scheduler partitions the reconfigurable area into blocks with different widths and assigns each arriving task to one of these blocks based on task width and space availability. The idea of regions (blocks) derives from conserving space when stacking boxes in a room by stacking similar sized boxes on top of each other. Simulation results show improved performance for our proposed placement method compared to basic methods and prior algorithms.
