Abstract
Process planning and scheduling have conflicting objectives. Since in most cases process planning and scheduling are performed separately, many problems arise within the manufacturing system. Integrating the problem domains of process planning and scheduling leads to a more efficient production control system. This research concerns itself with the lack of consideration of scheduling criteria during process planning. In this research an existing generative CAPP (Computer Aided Process Planning) system is studied in detail. A functional analysis of the CAPP system is then carried out using the IDEF0 modeling methodology. From the functional analysis the functional areas that affect scheduling and the scheduling criteria to be incorporated are identified. A methodology is developed, which utilizes a mathematical model, to incorporate scheduling criteria in a generative CAPP system. The mathematical model consists of a relative measure of the suitability of assigning an operation performed on a part, to a machine. This relative measure is called the Usage Index. The CAPP system used in this research is CMPP ( Computer Managed Process Planning). The mathematical model developed is implemented in CMPP via a software that was developed as a part of this research. On testing the methodology using two test parts and it was concluded after the implementation that it is feasible to incorporate scheduling criteria in an existing generative CAPP system.
