Abstract
Research in less developed countries has generally been viewed as the province of universities and national research institutes. Increasingly, however, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have become an important source of knowledge generation. Using Kerala in India as a research site, an attempt is made in this article to present a methodology for the identification and study of non-governmental research organisations (NGROs) in the agricultural and environmental sectors, and to compare and contrast NGROs and state research institutes and university-based research centres.
