Abstract
This essay draws on ten years of work in south India to develop an interpretation of empowerment based on the concept of circumvention. In light of the physical and social restrictions placed on many Indian women, a case for the positive impact of information and communication technologies (ICTs) on gender equality is difficult to build. We show how women professionals use the Internet to circumvent gender codes that govern behavior, particularly those that limit access to social capital. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
