Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate dynamics of gender and family structures as influential factors shaping the career trajectories of male and female academics and researchers in the state of Kerala, India. Through a comprehensive analysis of 2010 survey data, we scrutinize gender disparities in productivity, focusing on conference presentations, writing output, professional activities, and attitudes pertaining to work–family conflict and women’s roles within the scientific community. While gender imbalances in scientific participation and professional outcomes have been extensively studied, the specific context of Kerala provides a unique lens into this phenomenon, expanding the discourse beyond the well-researched territories of the United States and Western Europe. This research contributes valuable insights to the broader global conversation on gender equality in academia, shedding light on the nuanced challenges faced by scientists in a diverse cultural and geographical setting.
