Abstract
Exploring the Regional Human Resource Development (Regional HRD) ecosystem in Southeast Asia comes with an assortment of questions, critiques, and implications for HRD research, policy, and practice. This chapter explores questions and critiques associated with ASEAN and the ASEAN Way, challenges to regionalism, Southeast Asia as a region of disparities, and the dark side of developing people. It also reflects on the situatedness of this book within the National HRD and Regional HRD literature and if those are indeed valid constructs. Implications for future research are provided to dive deeper into the Regional HRD ecosystem, chart a path for more contextualized research in the region, and develop studies that unpack Regional HRD and region-building in Southeast Asia and beyond. Lastly, this chapter provides concluding remarks related to how the region can further coordinate its efforts, facilitate additional regional networking of HRD practitioners, use HRD to close regional development gaps, and undertake regional disaster relief.
