Abstract
A growing body of work indicates the importance of cognition to leader performance. However, less attention has been placed on leader judgment and the elements of cognition that support effective leader judgment. In this chapter, we examine cognition and its relationship to leader judgment. Subsequently, we identify four cognitive skills leaders employ that enable them to engage in effective leader judgment: 1) goal analysis, 2) constraint analysis, 3) forecasting, and 4) idea evaluation. Individual and situational variables facilitating the effective application of these skills are discussed. Additionally, the implications of these observations are examined with reference to the assessment, development, and execution of these critical skills, such that leader judgment may be enhanced.
