Abstract
Clinical neuropsychology is an applied science that focuses on assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with brain disorders. This chapter discusses the various people, places, and events from around the world that have contributed to, and influenced, the historical foundations of clinical neuropsychology. It presents the purposes of neuropsychological assessment, as well as the different approaches that clinical neuropsychologists use to evaluate, treat, and provide feedback for their patients. The chapter also presents a global perspective towards neuropsychological assessment that emphasizes how social and cultural factors can influence human behavior, particularly within the context of a brain injury. Standard neuropsychological assessment is costly and time intensive, and computerized methods of measurement offer the potential to improve the efficiency of the assessment process. In addition, use of computer-based instruments may pave the way for easier access to neuropsychological services around the globe.
