Abstract
Individuals with elevated social anxiety, including those with social anxiety disorder (SAD), appear especially vulnerable to experiencing substance-related problems including substance use disorders. Patients with co-occurring social anxiety and substance use problems experience poorer treatment outcomes. This chapter provides an overview of the scope of the problem (e.g., high rates of comorbid SAD and substance use disorders, poor treatment response of these patients), reviews the extant literature on treatment outcomes associated with treatments developed for and tested with SAD patients with substance use disorders, and provides empirically informed treatment recommendations and suggestions for additional work in this area.
