Abstract
This introduction was written to frame the intent of the book and set the stage for a discussion of disaster effects from a life span developmental perspective. The first part begins with a glimpse of the local experience of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the communities and people who lived in storm-affected areas during the hurricane season of 2005 and the years since then. The purpose and content of this book is presented next. A brief overview of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita characterizes these disasters and what happened in their aftermath, providing relevant background information for the chapters that follow. In the next part, developmental considerations in a disaster context are discussed and the individual chapters in this book are highlighted. The introduction concludes by underscoring the timeliness of considering natural disasters from a developmental perspective. The need for systematic research, clinical interventions, and thoughtful disaster planning is emphasized to increase the likelihood of effective preparation and management of future catastrophic hurricanes on local, state, and national levels. © 2009 Springer-Verlag New York.
