Abstract
Houellebecq’s satire centers on a surprisingly peaceful takeover of France by a Muslim political party. The new regime promises a period of economic prosperity and sexual fulfillment at home, along with stability and international agreements abroad. The cultural elite is bought off with lavish endowments to the universities. The French, so it seems, gladly submit to the new dispensation. However, a closer reading suggests that many of the promises of President Mohamed Ben Abbes are never clearly realized. In submitting to a foreign religion, the French acquiesce to a mere hope.
