Abstract
The letter frames charges against administrators for self-destruction of departments at the University of Cincinnati. The author says that the administrators should use the incentives at their disposal to send the signal that quality teaching and research are requiste activities for faculty members at a research university. According to him, maintaining an active research agenda is absolutely necessary if a faculty member is to be a competant teacher at a research university.
