Abstract
A field survey of four drilling-mud reserve pits associated with 14,000-ft [4267-m] exploratory wells onshore U.S. gulf coast is presented. Each pit was sampled with a three-dimensional grid base with 80 to 100 samples per pit. The samples were analyzed for solids, liquids, rheological properties, and such contaminants as oil, chlorides, and metals (Cr, Pb, Ba, and Zn). The statistical data were used to develop the recommended pit sampling procedure, which included the best sampling depth and the optimum number of samples to assess the metal toxicity within a given accuracy. Two example calculations are also presented.
