Abstract
Music educators acknowledge the potential role that online learning could play in granting access to musical information, education and music-making opportunities. During the past decade, researchers have demonstrated how the Internet can be used to facilitate formal and informal asynchronous or synchronous music instruction. As video-conferencing and online teaching software have improved, educators have studied the practicality and efficacy of teaching instrumental music online. Many music researchers have focused on the viability, benefits and challenges of specific types of instrumental or informal online music instruction, while the best professional practices have yet to be fleshed out by music educators.
