Abstract

In this study, we introduce a computer model that integrates building information models (BIM) with a project independent, template-based activity model to generate draft schedules for construction projects. The activities in the activity model are predefined and stored, reflecting the level of detail individual firms prefers for different type of projects. When the design for a building is ready, the system extracts the necessary data from it and integrates it with the template, to produce the activities relevant to that specific design. To sequence the activities, the system considers factors such as physical relationship between components, gravitational support, trade sequencing, etc. In addition, during the process of generating activities, a link between the BIM objects and the activities is established to automate visualization of the construction process. By maintaining a general and up-to-date activity structure to reflect evolving construction methods and requirements, construction companies can benefit from this approach as it allows them to easily reuse their previous experience for upcoming projects. As part of an ongoing research, this paper gives more emphasis to the generation of project-specific from the general activity model.
