Abstract
The design of hydrodynamic bearings that can prevent thermally induced seizure (TIS) when oil runs dry is discussed. Bearings starved of lubricant generate excessive heat. It was found that the doubling of radial clearance in the design extends seizure time to about 22 sec. Increasing clearance may avoid seizure together because of more room for expansion and reduced thermal load with a smaller contact area between the shaft and bearing bore.
