Abstract

In general, degradation of a tribo-pair involves multiple degradation processes. Yet existing wear models assume that only a single wear mechanism is present and thus fail to properly characterize the wear behavior. The present work applies the degradation entropy generation (DEG) theorem to arrive at a viable procedure for assessing wear involving multiple mechanisms. This theorem correlates the degradation forces and the entropy generation through a so-called degradation coefficient. To validate the hypothesis, laboratory experiments are performed on steel-brass tribo-pairs that experience transition from initially adhesive wear to the abrasive regime. Using the principles of thermodynamics, a simplified procedure is proposed that takes the existence of different regimes into account. The validation of the proposed method is also demonstrated using independent test results published in the literature.
