Abstract
Surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) was applied to commercial C-103 Nb alloy at both ambient and cryogenic (77K) temperatures. After SMAT, the as-received and SMAT treated samples were processed at temperature (1200°C) for 4 hours of pack silicification. The results showed that the different thickness ratios of NbSi 2/Nb 5Si 3 layers are associated with the different surface pretreatments. X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) were used to characterize the products after the SMAT processing. For the SMAT samples, the thickness of NbSi 2 decreased while the thickness of Nb 5Si 3 increased. Copyright © 2011 MS&T'11®.
