Control System Development for Wave Energy Converters with Active Mechanical Motion Rectifier

Lisheng Yang received the Bachelor degree from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 2015, the M.S. degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2016, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2025. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan. His current research interests include control applications in marine renewable energy systems and control co-design of hydrokinetic energy harvesting systems, particularly wave energy converters.
Zechuan Lin received the B.E. degree in electrical engineering from North China Electrical Power University, Beijing, China, in 2019 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing in 2024. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher with the Centre for Ocean Energy Research at Maynooth University in Ireland. His research focuses on control and control co-design of wave energy converters.
John V. Ringwood received the Diploma in electrical engineering from Technological University, Dublin, Ireland, in 1981, the Ph.D. degree in control systems from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, U.K., in 1985, and the MA in Music Technology from Maynooth University. From 1985 to 2000, he was with the School of Electronic Engineering, Dublin City University, Dublin, and held visiting positions with Massey University, New Zealand, and The University of Auckland, New Zealand. He is currently a Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering and the (Founding) Director of the Centre for Ocean Energy Research, Maynooth University, Ireland. He was Founding Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Maynooth University and was the Dean of Engineering there from 2001 to 2006. He is co-author of the monograph Hydrodynamic Control of Wave Energy Devices (with Umesh Korde). His research interests include renewable energy systems (and wave energy in particular), physiology, and exercise physiology, and focuses on control systems and its applications. Dr. Ringwood was the co-recipient of the IEEE 2016 Control Systems Outstanding Paper Award and the 2023 IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy , Journal of Ocean Engineering and Marine Energy, and IET Renewable Power Generation. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of Engineers Ireland, and an IFAC Fellow.
Lei Zuo is the Herbert C. Sadler Collegiate Professor of Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is the founding director of the NSF Industry–University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) GO Blue, growing ocean energy technologies and the blue economy. His research interests include marine renewable energy systems, energy harvesting, vibration control, mechatronic system design, and advanced manufacturing. Dr. Zuo has led more than 120 research projects with total funding exceeding $46 million from federal agencies and industry. He has authored over 400 publications, including 20 recognized with best paper awards. He has supervised about 90 graduate students, mentored 20 postdoctoral researchers, and advised over 400 undergraduate students in research and senior design projects. His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2017 ASME Leonardo da Vinci Award and two R&D 100 Awards. Dr. Zuo earned his B.S. degree from Tsinghua University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before joining academia, he spent four years in industry and later served as a professor of mechanical, electrical, and ocean engineering at Virginia Tech, where he directed the NSF IUCRC Center for Energy Harvesting Materials and Systems.
