Abstract

Sports officials, facing challenges from various stakeholders, are particularly vulnerable and in need of positive psychological health, with the management of officials' mental well-being crucial for fair play and retention. Meanwhile, the decline in the quality and number of officials has been regarded as a crisis in the field of sports, regardless of sporting level. This chapter explores the promises and pitfalls of managing the mental well-being of sports officials. It presents how mental toughness and resilience among such personnel can be developed and how these two key psychological capacities can augment sports officials' overall mental welfare. Mental toughness is a crucial psychological attribute that allows individuals to cope with demands, maintain determination, and perform well under pressure. Resilience is the ability to rebound from adversity and promote positive changes, and officials' resilience is essential for their performance and mental well-being. This chapter includes a case study of a young female sports official, which highlights the importance of recruiting, retaining, and supporting officials on and off the field. The chapter concludes with a presentation of strategic options for practitioners in contemporary sports organizations to mold engaged officials and solve official shortage issues through improved mental well-being.
