Abstract
Does identifying with the party in power create a difference between people’s support for democracy in general and specific elements? I look to answer this question by looking at survey data from countries in Latin America. I hypothesize that the incongruence between democratic beliefs would be larger among people who support those in power. Moreover, I argue this effect is mostly driven by changes in support for liberal elements of democracy. The results partly support what was hypothesized. Moreover, I conduct a case study using data from Venezuela during the years Hugo Chávez was president, which would allow me to see the effects a leader such as him has in this dynamic. The expectation is very similar, but in addition I hypothesize that incongruence was made worse over time. The results for Venezuela support the hypotheses for some years.
