Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the experiences of continuing medical education (CME) providers using failure stories in self-study narratives for program accreditation. Using case study research design, I explored CME provider’s experiences while considering the use of failure in a high-stakes accreditation document. Exploring failures or adverse outcomes in medical education has been used as a teaching tool for over 100 years and is known as Morbidity & Mortality (M&M) conferences. This interprofessional M&M conference has been used to reflect on and improve patient care and safety and examine processes, systems, and structures in the healthcare system. This case study explored the use of failure narratives in reaccreditation self-studies and explored using a long-held tradition of quality improvement in accreditation.
