Summary form only given. The Calibrated Airborne Multispectral Scanner (CAMS), SPOT, the NOAA Advanced Very-High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), and the Multispectral Atmospheric Mapping Sensor (MAMS) have been used to investigate the behavior and changes in the Atchafalaya-Chenier Plain sedimentary system. This sedimentary system consists of the two subaerial river deltas (Atchafalaya and Wax Lake Outlet) plus the combined delta platform in Atchafalaya Bay, the inner continental shelf offshore and to the west, and the Chenier Plain coast of western Louisiana and easternmost Texas. Studies have shown that the Atchafalaya Delta is stable, and the Wax Lake Outlet is rapidly prograding seaward, as is the Chenier Plain coast. The coastal boundary layer offshore of the deltas and Chenier Plain flows generally westward with interruptions by NW winds. Fine-grained sediment is transported predominantly westward, AVHRR data indicate, by both a coast-hugging mudstream and large offshore plumes. 100-200 m of consolidated mud accumulate annually in winter as cold fronts drive a coastal accumulation of fine-grained sediments from the inner shelf. In contrast, sand-sized sediment is transported to the southwest of the Atchafalaya delta under the influence of NW winds.
