Abstract

This article examines Sofía Casanova's input in the post-1898 debate about 'the problem of Spain'. By taking into consideration the role of gender relations in the author's scrutiny of Spain's past, present, and future in her play La madeja (1913), this essay brings to light the perspective of this writer on the causes of the country's decline, current dilemmas and concerns related to the future, and the uneasy path to regeneration.
