Abstract
Modelling is a critical concept for both mathematics education and biology. This chapter contributes to cross-fertilization between these domains by illustrating how the concept of intrinsic computation in biology maps to a common definition of mathematical modelling in mathematics education. This comparison potentially enriches theoretical groundings for the mathematical modelling community by broadening beliefs about mathematics, and definitions of mathematical modelling and mathematization.
