Abstract

Teamwork has always been an essential part of the planning, delivery, and evaluation of special education. Effective teamwork is facilitated by collaborative practice. In this chapter, we define collaboration and provide a rationale for why collaborative practice supports students with social-emotional-behavioral concerns. We define high-leverage practices in special education and outline three teaching practices that are considered under the collaboration umbrella. In applying collaboration principles to effective behavior management, we explain how educational professionals can work together to teach students to use behaviors and skills across settings, with different people, and under different circumstances (generalization). We discuss how special education teachers can work with schoolwide support team members to effectively and efficiently provide students with appropriate social-emotional-behavioral support. And we provide educators with research-based recommendations for effectively training and using paraprofessionals in a myriad of roles to support improved student social-emotional-behavioral outcomes.
