Abstract
Over the last several decades, there has been an increased reliance upon medication therapy to help manage student behavior within schools. This increased use of psychotropic medications has in many ways mirrored the persistent demand placed upon schools to help address the mental health needs of children and adolescents nationwide. While only 6% of U.S. adolescents are currently prescribed psychotropic medications for mental health needs, the prevalence rates among students with disabilities is significantly higher (50% to 76%). In this chapter we provide a brief overview of the major classes of psychotropic medications, including their potential therapeutic and adverse side effects. We also offer recommendations for teachers to help ensure safe and effective use of medication therapy within schools.
