Abstract

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports is a comprehensive framework schools use to promote school safety and appropriate behavior. This proactive approach to behavior management focuses on teaching and rewarding prosocial behaviors. It contrasts with traditional school disciplinary procedures which have historically focused on punishing inappropriate behaviors. The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports framework is based on behavioral research and places a consistent effort on reinforcing appropriate student behaviors. In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of the different tiers or levels of interventions, focusing on primary or Tier 1 interventions which are preventive in nature and help create a positive and reinforcing learning environment. Strategies discussed include positive greetings at the door, behavioral momentum, positive reinforcement, high praise-to-reprimand ratio, behavior-specific praise, precorrection, prompting, redirection, group contingency reinforcement, differential reinforcement, social-emotional learning, and parental involvement.
