Abstract
The focus of this chapter is on developing positive student-teacher interactions by incorporating proactive measures designed to enhance student learning and prevent many problem behaviors from occurring. We discuss how to set up your classroom (e.g., classroom arrangement and design), establish classroom structure and routines (e.g., developing schedules, classroom rules), implement effective preventive measures (e.g., proximity control, active supervision), use various instructional methods (e.g., modeling, opportunities to respond), and identify research- or evidence-based practices (e.g., peer-mediated instruction) to increase student engagement and reduce the likelihood of disruptive student behaviors.
