Abstract
In this chapter we demonstrate how an understanding of the purpose or function of problem behavior can help educators improve decision-making and instructional action and, ultimately, student and classroom behavior. We begin by discussing how to effectively and meaningfully identify the problem behavior that is of prime concern to educators and poses a risk to student safety or significantly hinders the learning environment. We then describe a sequence of methods used in collecting data before, during, and after the occurrence of problem behavior. Data are collected purposefully to plan and implement an effective intervention. Before discussing the development of behavior intervention plans, we describe three assessment mechanisms used to determine behavioral function: functional behavior assessment, structural analysis, and functional analysis. We close the chapter with information regarding how behavioral goals are included in students’ individualized education programs.
