French Language in Nigerian Popular Music

Author #1

Description

In this presentation, I wish to engage the representations of French language in the popular music of Ololade Asake who, though benefiting from diverse musical genres across Africa, is widely known for his contributions to the Nigerian Afrobeats Music. I shall give attention to Asake’s ‘‘Joha’’ and ‘‘Yoga.’’ These two songs lead me to conclude that, though producing his music majorly in Yoruba, English, and Pidgin languages, Asake explores global languages, including French and French Creole, to enrich the power of his music.
