Abstract

This article describes Michel Deguy's attitude toward change manifested in his ecological vision. From his sober consideration of Baudelaire's unfulfilled prophecy that the world will end, to his own realization of the drastic mutations in his own world, Deguy acknowledges the inevitability of historical change. During more than two decades, he shared his vision with the artist Bertrand Dorny. Many of his ideas on this topic were first expressed in the artists’ books they created together. In his recent volumes, La Fin dans le monde and Écologiques, he continues to elaborate his personal definition of ecology, and his distinct version of ecological criticism which goes beyond notions of nostalgia and dystopia.
