Abstract
This chapter explores the possibilities for more-than-human belonging in a molecular and atomic universe. The chapter claims that narrative theories of matter enable an awareness of active, participatory belonging in broad systems of performing, agential matter that far exceed the bounds of the individual. By utilizing the story of a particular dead songbird—a brown thrasher, Toxostoma rufum—the author highlights the role of specificity in both understanding the more-than-human world as “storied” and developing ethical approaches to multispecies encounters.
