Abstract
For many in transportation, the need to integrate evacuation planning and preparedness into the routine day-to-day operations and management of transportation modes and systems in America began on September 11, 2001 (9/11). This article highlights evacuation policy, planning, and operation innovations that have occurred in the 20 years since 9/11, as well as a brief history of conditions before 2001 and the direction of the field of evacuation.
