The synthesis of star polymers has attracted much attention as these materials have the ability to self-organize in bulk and can be used as novel amphiphiles. The two principal techniques for preparing star-shaped polymers are the arm-first and core-first methods. Since star polymers exhibit a lower hydrodynamic volume than their linear analogues, it can be anticipated that the self-ordering properties of C60-polyethylene oxide (PEO) stars will be different than those of C60-derivatized linear homologues.
