Abstract
We examine the influence of electrode preparation on product selectivity during the electrochemical reduction of CO2 using electrodes prepared by electrochemical deposition of Cu2O onto various supports. In all cases, electrodes prepared using electrodeposited Cu2O layers produce higher C2H4/CH4 ratios than those observed using metallic Cu foils. The highest ratio for C2H4/CH4 products is observed using a bi-layer electrode prepared by electrodeposition of Cu2O onto a previously oxidized Cu foil. The implications of these results for understanding the reaction mechanism of CO2 electroreduction are discussed briefly.
